Thespark had been a literary web site launched by 4 Harvard students upon January 7, 1999. The majority of the Sparks users were senior high school and college college students. To increase the websites popularity, the creators published the very first six literature research guides (known as SparkNotes) upon April 7, 1999.
In 2000, the creators sold the website to iTurf Inc. The next year, Barnes & Respectable purchased SparkNotes as well as selected fifty books study guides to create in print structure. When Barnes & Respectable printed SparkNotes, these people stopped selling their own chief competitor, CliffsNotes.
Within January 2003, SparkNotes created a practice check service called SparkNotes Check Prep. This project was then the release associated with SparkCharts, reference sheets that summarize a subject; No Fear Shakespeare, transcriptions associated with Shakespeare's plays in to modern language; with no Fear Literature, transcriptions of literary classics such as the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and also the Scarlet Letter in to modern language.
